“Protecting the future, Sustaining the Industry”

That was the theme of this year’s Pest Summit held last October 24 to 26 at the Ecoville Resort and Convention Center in the beautiful island of Boracay, Philippines. Organized by the Pest Control Association of the Philippines (PCAP), the Pest Summit 2012 drew delegates from the ASEAN region and other parts of the world including pest management professionals, researchers and members of the academia, innovators, and representatives of pest management-related industries.

The Pest Summit is an international biennial conference on urban pest management. Hosted by each of the member association: Indonesia Pest Control Association (IPCA), Pest Control Association of Malaysia (PCAM), Singapore Pest Management Association, (SPMA), and Thailand Pest Management Association (TPMA) and Pest Control Association of the Philippines (PCAP), the Summit is a great venue to learn the latest research findings, technology and experience relevant to the pest management industry.

High-calibre resource speakers from different universities, research institutions, and chemical and pest management companies were invited in the three-day conference. To name a few, Prof. Chow-Yang Lee (Universiti Sains Malaysia) and Prof. Edward Vargo (North Carolina State University) discussed about bed bug biology and control, Dr. Lee Ching Ng (Director, Environmental Health Institute, Singapore) on mosquito and dengue management, Dr. Hou-Feng Li (Academia Sinica), Dr. Menandro Acda (U.P. Los Baños) and Prof. Tsuyoshi Yoshimura (Kyoto University) talked about subterranean and drywood termites, among others.

On its fifth edition, the Philippines hosted the event for the first time. As for the Pest Control Association of the Philippines (PCAP), the oldest pest management association in Southeast Asia, the Pest Summit 2012 also marked another milestone for the association as it celebrates its 50th founding anniversary this year.
